It's undeniable that nearly everyone in the world has experienced some form of trauma. Therefore, conflict management demands a deeper understanding, sensitivity, and emotional intelligence. Managing conflicts with a trauma-informed approach is essential for fostering a supportive and healthy work environment.
In the following, I will explore why I believe conflict managers should possess trauma-informed knowledge to effectively manage conflict situations.
Perception: Many perceive trauma-informed conflict management as simply acknowledging that individuals may have experienced trauma and offering sympathy. It may be viewed as a superficial acknowledgment of past experiences without delving into practical conflict resolution strategies. Others may believe that trauma-informed approaches involve over-psychologizing, which is unrealistic for managers who are not licensed psychologists. They may lack the time, energy, tools, or knowledge to embrace this perspective.
Reality: In reality, trauma-informed conflict management encompasses a holistic approach that prioritizes safety, trust, and empowerment. This approach goes beyond merely developing emotional intelligence. It involves both conflict managers and conflict stakeholders as a whole. It provides additional knowledge on how trauma can influence behaviours and responses, allowing for the adaptation of conflict resolution techniques accordingly. Therefore, it helps conflict managers elevate their skills to the next level, including active listening, empathy, and collaborative problem-solving, enabling them to address conflicts effectively and successfully. This, in turn, fosters a positive workplace culture where employees thrive.
